Life is just a series of moments. And all we can do is try to make those moments memorable.
And you know what? One small moment can make or break a relationship. You know those first few dates when you’re desperate to find out all you can about each other? And you’re holding your breath for their answers, because you’re hoping they won’t say something that puts you off, like that they like to hunt, or that they smoke weed 24/7, or that they’ve been unemployed for ten years. And we don’t want to admit we just might be that shallow, but if there is one little thing there that makes you recoil… should you listen to it? Isn’t that your inner voice giving you a headsup, warning you that there are irreconcilable differences, and to walk away while you still can? Or are you meant to smile at them and think ok, I can live with the fact that you hate cats.
I’m not saying I expect people to be perfect, or that their every thought should replicate mine. But I am saying, listen to the warnings. Because there are some things that can’t be overlooked.
And also, there are some moments when they say something like “I always wanted to write, I always wanted to own eight cats, I always wanted to have a house full of art” – and you realise maybe, they are perfect.
