A poem for Blair.

In Focus

1.

Some days

the only things that matter

are the million tiny kindnesses

the sound the cat makes

when she lands on the bed

all the words you’ve whispered

cats do not care

if you haven’t brushed your hair

or gotten up in days

or replied to emails

or answered phone calls

or done anything more than stare at the ceiling

as long as they can nap

in the crook of your body

they forgive you.

2.

Cats purr at a range of 20-140 Hertz

which is medically therapeutic

for knitting bones and healing soft tissue

when you draw hearts

you’re supposed to start from the middle

and work your way outwards

but the method doesn’t account for

lines of healed scars

or the cat curled on your chest.
