\nbrought us his ancestors on his tongue

\nlaid them down
\ntold them with fluttering hands
\nand played them, their hollow ghosts
\nwith instruments called from ancient wood
\nHe wrought words for us
\nthe songsmith, the kereru
\nThe poetry of the pub
\nHis history
\nour history hanging like threads on the notes
\nhe said to me
