{"id":336,"date":"2017-11-27T22:57:31","date_gmt":"2017-11-27T22:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.writehanded.org\/poetry\/?p=336"},"modified":"2017-11-27T22:57:31","modified_gmt":"2017-11-27T22:57:31","slug":"without-mathematics-there-is-no-art-luca-pacioli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writehanded.org\/poetry\/2017\/11\/27\/without-mathematics-there-is-no-art-luca-pacioli\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cWithout Mathematics There is No Art\u201d &#8211; Luca Pacioli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Propesterous.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What a grandiose claim.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m personally offended, Sir.<\/p>\n<p>Maths has <em>nothing to do with<\/em> poetry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(That\u2019s not true, of course, but I\u2019m allowed to say it<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It\u2019s called <em>poetic license<\/em> &#8211; )<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the strange thing about language<\/p>\n<p>It never does quite what you expect,<\/p>\n<p>and therein lies the rub. Poets don\u2019t want to be predictable<\/p>\n<p>and numbers always are.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The golden mean<\/em>, having been discovered, and rediscovered, and renamed, over several centuries<\/p>\n<p>is one of the greatest numbers there is<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Da Vinci\u2019s <em>sectio aurea <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Luca Pacioli\u2019s <em>Divine Proportion<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The simple symbol <em>Phi<\/em><\/p>\n<p>for the Greek artist and architect Phideas<\/p>\n<p>who died in exile, falsely accused<\/p>\n<p>of stealing the gold for a statue of the virgin Goddess Athena<\/p>\n<p>inside the Parthenon<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Phi<\/em> is present<\/p>\n<p>in <em>The Last Supper<\/em><\/p>\n<p>in veins, leaves, and nerves<\/p>\n<p>in Da Vinci, Dali, and Corbusier<\/p>\n<p>in the geometry of stone<\/p>\n<p>and in the magnetic resonance of spins in cobalt niobate crystals<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is the closest reason I have ever been given<\/p>\n<p>for believing in God<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, poet, you may yell all you like<\/p>\n<p>about licenses, and numbers, and words with exponential meaning.<\/p>\n<p>But the ages do not listen to you<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps when you learn<\/p>\n<p>of the life given by an organ<\/p>\n<p>from someone else\u2019s body<\/p>\n<p>you may rememeber<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That silence is golden.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Propesterous.
