{"id":143,"date":"2012-10-22T01:12:10","date_gmt":"2012-10-22T01:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sundayscars.wordpress.com\/?p=143"},"modified":"2012-10-22T01:12:10","modified_gmt":"2012-10-22T01:12:10","slug":"pocket-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writehanded.org\/poetry\/2012\/10\/22\/pocket-watch\/","title":{"rendered":"Pocket Watch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Suffering gently from<\/p>\n<p>a poverty of ideas, the girl<\/p>\n<p>swayed on the edge of Occam\u2019s Razor and wondered about<\/p>\n<p>being imprisoned for eighteen years for a crime you didn\u2019t commit, and if<\/p>\n<p>she\u2019d been lead astray, or if she\u2019d just<\/p>\n<p>thought about it for too long.<\/p>\n<p>She had thought there was a lot of time for thinking.<\/p>\n<p>The wrinkles of misfortune in her brow and velvet dress were deep and<\/p>\n<p>the gold pocket watch in her hand had no chain.<\/p>\n<p>Feet hanging over the side of the Edge, she<\/p>\n<p>finally began to realise that the watch was in fact lying to her,<\/p>\n<p>and had been doing so all along<\/p>\n<p>It had promised that there could be a beginning, and a middle,<\/p>\n<p>and and that if she only stayed for long enough, the end would be just<\/p>\n<p>But, on the edge and peering down into her palm she saw<\/p>\n<p>that the whole round face of it had been a farce<\/p>\n<p>There was only one thing the watch, and all other watches, should have ever told her<\/p>\n<p>only one thing they could have said that could be true<\/p>\n<p>The beginnings were lost. The middles were hesitant and deceptive and painful. The endings existed only as a concept for the captive and corrupt.<\/p>\n<p>So the only thing the watch could have honestly spoken to her,<\/p>\n<p>and to any of us, ever<\/p>\n<p>was \u201cnow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>This poem was inspired by a quote from Damien Echols, one of the &#8220;Memphis Three,&#8221; who were wrongfully imprisoned for murder. Damien served 18 years on death row before walking free.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One thing I\u2019d dearly love to have is an hourglass. Or a whole collection of them- some that measure minutes, some that measure hours, some that measure the whole day. And grandfather clocks! And pocket watches. The thing I like most about time is that it\u2019s not real. It\u2019s all in the head. Sure, it\u2019s a useful trick to use if you want to meet someone at a specific place in the universe and have tea or coffee- but that\u2019s all it is- a trick. There is no such thing as the past. It exists only in the memory. There is no such thing as the future. It exists only in our imagination.
